Chapter 315
Not only did John get the scoop, but the other three big families also sent their guys to track down Joe.
But by the time they hit the dock, Joe had already scattered his crew.
When John's guys showed up at Joe's place, the room was empty except for a piece of paper pinned to the wall.
The note read:
"Sorry, Mr. Williams. I did say I wouldn't help Jasper skip town without cash. But he had a few gold teeth. I had no choice but to take his offer and get him out. So don't hold it against me! Always respectful, Joe."
John's men rolled their eyes at the note and brought it back.
John ripped it to shreds after reading it.
Meanwhile, Joe was chilling in Mike's office, munching on ice cream.
Joe grinned. "John must be losing it right now, huh? Think he'll just tear up the note?"
Mike leaned back in his chair, smirking, "I bet what he really wants to tear up is you."
Joe shrugged. "Nah, I'm worth way more than that note. Besides, I didn't lie. No money, no help for Jasper. It's all about the gold!"
Mike waved his hand dismissively. "Alright, enough about those gold teeth. Every time I see your bling, I think of Jasper's nasty mouth, and it grosses me out."
Joe flashed his gold ring and necklace. "You don't get it. Gold's got a charm. Those pretty ladies might find your face gross, but when they see the gold around your neck, they'll be all smiles and fall right into your arms."
Mike rolled his eyes. "Mr. Williams said you should lay low for a while, so no chasing after those curvy beauties."
"No way, I just set up a date with a hottie," Joe grumbled.
But just then, Mike's phone rang.
Mike glanced at the caller ID, his expression turning serious.
"Shut up, it's John," Mike hissed at Joe.
Joe, still chuckling, clamped his hand over his mouth.
Once Joe quieted down, Mike answered the call.
"Mr. Williams, what can I do for you?" Mike asked, his voice dropping to a serious tone.
On the other end of the line, John asked icily, "Has my uncle been up to anything lately? Did he send anyone to the dock?"
Mike feigned surprise and shook his head. "Nope, our guys haven't been near the dock recently. Why do you ask?"
John sneered, "Are you kidding me? The only people at the Moonlit Lounge that night, besides me, were your guys. You know Jasper had the contact info for some human smuggler, right?"
Mike's tone turned frosty. "Mr. Williams, it was you who gave Jasper that contact info. Isn't it funny you're asking me now?"
John replied coldly, "The person I originally set up is dead, and Joe took his place. Are you seriously saying Joe has no ties to you guys?"
"Never heard of him before, Mr. Williams. Think about it. Isabella took Jasper to the hospital. She's the one most likely to have the contact info. Why don't you ask her?" Mike retorted.
John went silent. He couldn't believe Isabella would do something like that. In his mind, she wasn't that clever or sneaky.
John did suspect Michael. But if it was really Michael, wouldn't that mean he helped Jasper escape from the hospital?
However, everyone had analyzed Jasper's escape, and it was full of holes. If it weren't for the fact that all the guards had let their guard down, he wouldn't have been able to escape at all. If it was Michael, he wouldn't have made such a rookie mistake.
"Looks like you've figured something out, Mr. Williams. I won't keep you. Think it over. Anyway, if it wasn't me, why should I admit it?" Mike said, ready to hang up.
Mike was being blackmailed by John with a contract, so he didn't need to be polite.
But just then, John coldly snorted into the phone. "You better not be involved. When I catch that Joe, I'll tie him up and feed him to the crocodiles."
Joe, covering his mouth, widened his eyes in horror at John's words.
Mike smiled slightly. "Telling me won't help. You need to find Joe and talk to him."
Mike hung up the phone after saying that.
Joe finally let his hands drop. He had been too nervous to breathe. Now, breathing heavily, his face turned pale with fear.
"I was just messing with him. John actually wants to feed me to the crocodiles. That's too harsh," Joe said unhappily.
Mike smirked and said, "Don't you want to find a hottie? Go ahead! Have a great night."
Mike tried to push Joe out, but Joe refused to leave.
Joe clung to Mike's leg, crying, "No, I don't want to get killed. Those hotties might be planning to off me and collect a reward from John. It's safer to stay with you."
