Chapter 389
His eyes were filled with confusion, dimness, and regret. Memories flooded his mind in a chaotic, flickering manner. Ever since his mother fallen into a coma, he had harbored hatred toward Winnie. His actions were a relentless onslaught on her heart, inflicting pain, pushing her away, cursing her, and even manipulating Darcy to torment her. Despite it all, she had never been willing to leave back then.
It turned out that she had promised his mother to bear his child and take care of him no matter what mistakes he made. She was fulfilling her promise, loving him unconditionally. It took him three years to finally understand these things. At that time, instead of reciprocating Winnie's love, he protected and believed in Darcy. He was hurting her; Lawrence was pained by his past actions, wondering why fate played such tricks on people.
He was wrong from the beginning, mistaking Darcy for a good person. As a result, he distanced himself from Winnie for three years, treating her as his enemy, which led to the unfortunate incidents surrounding the births of their children and their separation.
It all stemmed from Darcy, beginning with the kidney donation-it was all part of a plot that deceived him for three whole years.
Lawrence's eyes turned red with anger, as countless pain and regret surged within him upon learning the truth from Madam Rodriguez. He held his head, facing Winnie's pale gaze, as if his heart was being struck by the tears in her eyes.
He trembled over as he shakily uttered, "Winnie..."
Finally, Winnie saw this man's realization, a trace of regret and pain. But her heart couldn't feel happy. She looked up at him, her tears glistening with resentment that she couldn't hide. "You learned about the truth of that night from your mother. But what about the things she couldn't say when she was in a coma? Lawrence, Darcy has blinded you for so long! Don't you remember that night I jumped into the sea? Olivia and I even found the girl who was willing to donate a kidney to your mother."
Lawrence's gaze stiffened.
Winnie sneered in a cold and bitter tone, "Do you realize how Darcy manipulated and deceived you after I jumped into the sea? But now you know, don't you? There's a girl whose kidney was bought by Darcy and given to your mother. Darcy passed off the girl's kidney as her own, meaning she should still have both her original kidneys. Oh, and about that night I jumped into the sea, how did Darcy instigate you and lead you to misunderstand and resent me for three years?"
Like being struck by lightning, Lawrence's whole body became weak, and her words pierced through his chest, causing a cold shiver running down his spine.
Winnie secured Madam Rodriguez's pulse monitor and put on the temporary oxygen mask. She stood up in desolation.
"Winnie," Madam Rodriguez pleaded, anxious to reveal the truth and prevent these two unfortunate children from misunderstanding each other further.
Winnie lowered her eyes without looking back, her voice clear and cold.
"Son, what are you still standing there for? Despite everything you've done wrong, you have to go after her," Madam Rodriguez urged.
Lawrence felt a heart-wrenching pain and desperately called out, "Winnie!"
On the first floor of the dilapidated house, Jeremy walked over with a look of anxiety, hesitating.
Winnie rushed over, looking behind him anxiously, and asked, "Jeremy, where is my son, Oscar? Lawrence asked you to search for him, so did you find him?"
Jeremy suddenly looked up, avoiding eye contact with her.
At that moment, Lawrence carried Madam Rodriguez up and also looked at Jeremy. "Where is the child?"
"Mr. Rodriguez, Winnie, I'm sorry I searched every part of this house, even the surrounding area for several meters but I couldn't find Oscar," Jeremy said.
Winnie's legs suddenly weakened, and her mind went blank amidst a buzzing sensation. She couldn't believe it and spoke with a sarcastic laugh, "What did you say? Jeremy, did you even search properly?"
"
"Yes, I sent over a dozen officers, and we searched every corner of the house, but still couldn't find Oscar. He's missing and it's very likely something happened to him."
"You're talking nonsense!" Winnie stumbled back and fell to the ground, her face turning pale. She vigorously shook her head. "Oscar was kidnapped together with Madam Rodriguez. They must be held captive in the same place. How could he be missing? No, it can't be!"
"Jeremy, keep looking. I haven't seen Oscar yet. He can't be in trouble!" Lawrence clenched his fists, feeling his heart racing.
Winnie crawled on the ground, desperate, and ran outside as if going mad. She desperately yelled, "Oscar, come out. Stop playing hide and seek with Mommy. You're such a caring child. You wouldn't want to make Mommy worry, right? Oscar! My child, my child, where are you?!"
Winnie panicked. She had been treating Madam Rodriguez for so long, and she was certain that Oscar must be somewhere in this house. The thought of him not being there baffled her. She wondered where he had gone and whether he was still alive or dead. At this moment, Winnie's heart felt like it was being stabbed by a knife.
Lawrence chased after her and wrapped his clothes around her, trying to calm her down as she dashed around like a wild animal. "Winnie, try to calm down. I'll have Jeremy continue searching and comb through this mountain. I'm anxious too, but you can't break down on your own like this."
"Shut up!" Winnie turned her head uncontrollably and looked at his stern face. She lost her sanity. Her heart was in immense anguish and she couldn't help but slap his face. "Do you understand my anxiety? You never even met him; he was such an adorable child. It was all because of you for not believing me, not allowing me to treat your mother. That's why I had no choice but to come up with a plan involving Oscar. Who knew Darcy would discover it and they'd be kidnapped. But no, you didn't believe me, wasting more time to rescue them. Lawrence, I hate you! I hate you and Darcy! If something happens to Oscar, I will tear Darcy apart!"
Winnie cried helplessly, grabbing onto his trousers and squatting on the ground, weeping bitterly. "You're the same, even more hateful..."
Lawrence took a step back, his eyes engulfed in shadows as he glared at the woman. In that instant, his heart felt like it was being torn apart by a whirlwind of agony. He had painstakingly extracted the dagger lodged in his heart, only to find himself impaled by an even sharper one with Oscar's disappearance.
He had finally learned the truth of the past, but it felt like it was too late. In disbelief, he couldn't fathom Oscar being in trouble. Oscar was their son, the very bond that connected him and Winnie.
Lawrence closed his eyes tightly, bitterness engulfing his heart. He placed an umbrella above Winnie's head, turned around, and charged into the rain as he yelled furiously, "Continue searching for him! Leave no inch unexplored!" The man's roar echoed through the mountains.
Two hours later, as nightfall approached, the child still hasn't been found.
Lawrence received a phone call from Jeremy, "Mr. Rodriguez, Madam Rodriguez is running out of oxygen. You must quickly send her to the hospital by helicopter. And instead of aimlessly searching, questioning Darcy about the child's whereabouts would be the most direct approach."
"I know, I won't let this woman go." Lawrence's voice was as cold as the depths of hell, and his hollow eyes glinted with a chilling light.
He couldn't afford to linger any longer; his mother's life hung by a thread. In the pouring rain, the man hurried back up the mountain and watched as Winnie's delicate figure gracefully moved through the rain. He cryptically instructed Jeremy, "Take care of her, attend to her emotions, and don't let her get hurt."
Lawrence turned around and boarded the helicopter, coldly shouting at Bryan, "Confirm Darcy's location!"
Winnie searched desperately in the pouring rain, digging through every inch but still couldn't find her precious child.
The next morning, as the rain began to stop, Jeremy brought back a small shoe from the bottom of the mountain. The man's gaze also faintly turned red, and he handed the shoe to Winnie. Jeremy's throat tightened as he hesitantly informed Winnie, "Winnie, this is a small shoe I found by the roadside, it might belong to Oscar. Take a look, would you?"
Winnie held the familiar little shoe, and immediately felt her heart sink as if sinking to the bottom of the valley, frozen by the ice.
It was Oscar's. She felt her breath stagnate, her fingers trembling as she dared not think further.
Biting her lips until they bled, she raised her head with bloodshot eyes. "Where is Darcy? Take me to find her."
